Extremely rare footage of Ed Bickert from the late 1950s on the CBC program Parade playing "Makin' Whoopee" on his 1956 Gibson ES-175.
This clip is a fascinating look at his early development — you can already hear the incredible time feel, chordal clarity, and bebop language that would define his playing later on. Dig his comping throughout! But what’s especially interesting is that his iconic hybrid picking approach is not fully formed yet. 3:54 - 4:16 is when he uses the thumb exclusively.
At the start of his solo, he plays with his thumb — very much in the style of Wes Montgomery — before revealing the pick he’s been holding the whole time. Later, you can see him shifting between techniques:
putting the pick into his palm for chord grips
occasionally using his left-hand thumb for bass notes
blending approaches in real time
It’s a rare window into how his technique was still evolving.

「The show was called "Hit Parade." My Dad directed it. It was early in his development as well, but he'd already created his signature style for showcasing talented musicians. The facial close-ups to capture their mood, multiple angles centered on the full instrument, & finally the close-ups on their hands to showcase their dexterity. I was six years old, but it still impressed me. He kept that style throughout his career even as his technique evolved to a level that earned him 5 emmy nominations. Thank you for finding this. Now...
I'm gonna pick my jaw up off the floor.
Fun fact: Hit Parade had their own brand of cigarettes. No one working on that show was allowed to smoke anytrhing else & back then EVERYBODY smoked, trust me. When the show ended, the brand vanished like fog in the wind. 」
