The guitar is a Roland GR303 synth guitar (which is based on a Les Paul design, built in Japan by Tokai) which was modified with a NED Synclavier control panel and pickup system to drive the NED Synclavier synthesizer. The sound is a mix of the "acoustic" sound of the guitar and a Saxophone sound from the Synclavier. He uses this too on for example Third Wind and Half life of absolution. The sound of the Roland synth can be heard on Are you going with me
